Many of us have used that well known phrase popularized by Dr. Phil McGraw referring to someone’s behavior or continued activity that obviously is not working. So let me ask you a question, “How is what you are doing now to control your anger working for you?”
If you are truly able to say, “It is working fine”, then I congratulate you. But if you are like most people working through their anger problems alone then your answer is most likely something like “Not very well”.
Now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk about what we can do to really work on the problem.
First of all, the mere fact that you acknowledge having a problem is a sign that you have overcome the first really big obstacle, and I want to congratulate you on taking that first step.
Overcoming and controlling anger is something that requires diligence, consistency and a solid plan. Simply saying “I will not get angry anymore” does not work, if it did you would not be reading this. So what do we do?
Set a goal, make a plan and just do it. Starting today, begin working on it. Get some help, get some tools, make it a priority. Anger will not go away on its’ own, it needs to be confronted. Get tough with your anger.
